Hong Kong has one of the highest ecological footprints per capita in the Asia-Pacific region. Food is the largest contributor, accounting for about 21% of our total footprint. Meat contributes over half of diet-related greenhouse gas emissions and water use, despite making up a smaller portion of food by weight¹.

Local research shows that high red meat consumption increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes², while 97% of people in Hong Kong do not consume enough fruits and vegetables³. 

Around 50% of the world’s habitable land is used for agriculture, with a large share dedicated to livestock grazing or growing animal feed. For every 100 calories of crops fed to animals, less than 20 calories are returned as food, highlighting the inefficiency of meat production.
